To further promote the Chinese and Taoist culture in Singapore, Mr Tan Thiam Lye, PBM, Chairman of the Taoist Federation (Singapore), appealed for young Taoist devotees to join the Federation in our final quarterly issue of the Taoist News magazine in 2005.

After a year of preparation, the Taoist Federation Youth Group (Singapore) was officially formed in 2007 by a group of young Taoists who has shown keen interest in Taoism. The youth group laid five main objectives: To promote the Taoist Culture, to organise frequent activities, to develop youth Taoist leaders, to promote religious harmony and finally, to engage in community service.

Several members of the youth group participated in the Singapore Inter-faith Youth Forum 2007. The forum is a youth initiative to bring together religious youth leaders to network, interact and at the same time develop an inter-faith engagement methodology. The programme was adopted by the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) and supported by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), CSCDC and NYC.

Singapore Taoist Federation introduces inaugural course to help people learn more about the religion
27 Feb 2010

For the first time, the Singapore Taoist Federation has started a course about the religion to promote inter-religious understanding.

And some 70 people have enrolled in the programme – including 30 non-Taoists.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, George Yeo who launched the course today praised the Federation’s efforts to promote inter-religious understanding through such programmes.

“It’s good that there’ll be mutual understanding at that level between Christians, Muslims, Taoists. But at a different level, there’s also Taoist philosophy, which is something which can be embraced by everybody, not just those who believe in Taoist religion.”

Vice-Chairman of the Singapore Taoist Federation, Ling Kin Huat, said the course would also give the participants an in depth look at the religion.

“This one-year course, the student will learn about the Taoist philosophies, the art, rituals and Taoist culture. We are not only tell our devotees just to come to the temple and pray. With this course, they will know about the culture and philosophies of the Taoists.”

Total course fees for the course cost about $1,000.

And students with good attendance can get a waiver of some $600 upon completion.
